Amey Volunteers Help Transform National House Project Training Flat in Walsall

Amey Volunteers Help Transform National House Project Training Flat in Walsall

Posted 23rd October 2026

A team of five volunteers from Amey’s Walsall Street Lighting team has helped create a brighter, more welcoming space for young people at our Walsall Local House Project.

The volunteering took place as part of Amey’s Social Impact Day programme, giving colleagues the opportunity to volunteer and support the communities where they live and work. As part of this programme, the team spent two days redecorating the NHP training flat in Pleck, Walsall.

They repainted walls and doors throughout the property, giving the flat a fresh and brighter feel and helping to create a clean, comfortable environment for the young people who use it.

For a young person preparing to live independently, having a space that feels welcoming, safe and cared for can make a real difference. It is more than simply a freshly painted room, it is a place where young people can begin to picture themselves building a home and a future of their own.

Principal Operations Manager at Walsall Street Lighting, Nathan Davies commented:

"We were really pleased to support the National House Project and help give the training flat a fresh new look. As a team, we enjoy getting involved in projects that make a real difference in our communities, and this was one we were proud to be part of. As a signatory of the Care Leaver Covenant, Amey recognises the importance of supporting care-experienced young people as they build confidence and independence, so it was great to contribute to a space that will help them take those next steps."

The project was also made possible through the generous support of Amey’s supply chain partners. EH Smith Ltd donated painting and decorating materials and equipment, while CEF provided replacement lightbulbs for the flat.

As well as their time and practical skills, the Amey team also donated a selection of everyday essentials for young people staying at the flat, including tea, coffee, sugar, milk, biscuits and cleaning products. For a young person taking their first steps towards independence, those everyday touches can help a new space feel like somewhere they belong. A cup of tea, a well-lit room and a clean, welcoming environment can all help create that important feeling of being at home.

The NHP training flat plays an important role in helping young people prepare for independent living, providing a safe and practical environment where they can develop the skills and confidence they need for the future. The work carried out by Amey’s volunteers will help ensure the space feels welcoming and ready for the young people who rely on it.

We know that creating a home is about much more than four walls. It is about creating somewhere that feels safe, welcoming and personal and making it somewhere that a young person can take a breath, feel comfortable and start to imagine their next chapter. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has helped make that possible in Walsall.

Could your organisation support young people?

The support from Amey shows just how much can be achieved when businesses give their time, skills and resources to support young people in their local communities.

If your organisation is looking for meaningful ways to volunteer, support young people and make a lasting difference, we would love to hear from you. Whether it’s getting hands-on with a volunteering project, sharing skills and expertise, donating materials or finding another way to support a local House Project, there are lots of ways to get involved.

Together, we can help more young people create a home, build confidence and take their next steps towards independent living. If you’re interested in partnering with the National House Project, please get in touch with kat@thehouseproject.org to explore how your organisation could make a difference.
