Welcome to West Sussex House Project

West Sussex House Project is a Local House Project (LHP). All LHP's are members of the National House Project.  House Projects support young people leaving care to create their own homes and live connected and fulfilling lives.

What you should know about the House Project:

House Projects are co-designed with young people. They work together to develop relationships and learn skills that enable them to live successful adult lives. They have a choice in where they live and are involved in getting their property ready to become their home.

The House Project enables you to develop a community of support, provides a good home to live in and gives you control over your life, and ownership of your future. Young people have joint ownership of the House Projects with staff. They make decisions about how the House Project will run, have a say in how some of the budget is spent for the benefit of the project, put forward ideas for how extra funding could be used and can get involved in fund raising activities so that they can put good ideas into practice.

In the House Project you work as a team. When you join a House Project, you join as part of a new team of around 10 young people. As a team, you support each other, learn the skills you need to be independent and fix up and look after a property that will become your home for as long as you want to live there.

West Sussex House Project is represented by young people at the Care Leavers National Movement (CLNM) to ensure that a young person’s voice is at the heart of all decision making. They are joined by representatives from all other LHPs.

Celebrating Success at the Frontline Awards
Celebrating Success at the Frontline Awards

In May, we were proud to attend the Frontline Awards to celebrate Coventry City Council’s Pathways service winning the Multi-Agency Partnership of the Year award. Funded by the Rayne Foundation, the Pathways programme brings together a number of organisations, including NHP, Coram Voice and The Rees Foundation, working closely alongside the Throughcare Service, Coventry House Project and Lifelong Links. Together, the partnership supports young people leaving care to develop skills, build positive relationships, and focus on their emotional health and wellbeing. Three cohorts of young people from Coventry have now go through the Pathways Programme. Seeing the partnership recognised nationally was a fantastic moment and a powerful reflection of the impact collaborative working can have in supporting care-experienced young people.

Aspirational Awards Update
Aspirational Awards Update

In May, the Aspirational Awards panel awarded just over £15,000 to 19 young people across our LHPs. It was inspiring to see such a wide range of ideas, goals and determination reflected in the applications, and a privilege to support more young people as they take their next steps forward. Funding in Round 9 supported training + graduate employment scheme, equipment for a baking business and support for other businesses, sports sessions, music lessons, lifeguard course, and day trips. We have also recently completed a 3 year review of our Aspirational Awards and the impact they’ve had. Over the past 3 years, we’ve awarded over £147,000 to 138 young people (not including figures from our most recent round in May). If you would like to find out more about how to support the Aspirational Awards please get in touch.
